Do you wanna build a "snow" man? or A woman? or a Ball team?

SMMA Holiday Homes "Snow" Sculpture Community Challenge

When the Southwest Missouri Museum Associates (SMMA) were trying to think of fun creative ways to help showcase and integrate the Ozarks’ fine arts talent into the Holiday Homes Tour, as well as help make the homes easier to find, they looked around at the yards during the preceding season(s) and asked, “Why let those 12-foot-tall skeletons have all the fun?”

That’s why the SMMA is sponsoring a first-ever “Snow” Sculpture Community Challenge! This fun challenge will stretch your creative talents and enable you to take part in a great holiday season event that benefits arts education efforts and the Springfield Art Museum.

The winning “snow” sculptures will be fun, creative works that not only help tour attendees identify where the houses are located, but also provide a fun selfie moment and contribute to the festive atmosphere.

Who May Enter?

This fun challenge is open to individuals and groups of all levels of experience and ages who reside in, or physically attend school in, Southwest Missouri. Only one entry is allowed per person. (Ie. You cannot submit one entry as an individual artist, and another as part of a group.)

“Snow” Sculptures should

  • Be creative, fun, and original.
  • Be selfie-friendly.
  • Be tall enough to be easily spotted from the road.
  • Be easily portable. If you and one other person can’t easily move part of, or all, of the sculpture, it’s too heavy.
  • Be able to survive at least 24 hours outdoors in the elements, such as rain and snow.
  • This is a great opportunity to create a sculpture using recycled or repurposed materials such as milk jugs, packing materials, styrofoam, plastic bottles, etc.

Your “Snow” Sculpture Should Not

  • Be made with stone, concrete, or other heavy materials.
  • Be made with actual snow
  • Have been purchased already made from a commercial site or store
  • Be over eight feet tall.

What to Submit

  • Small-scale model of your sculpture (Think of this as a prototype for your full-size sculpture. For example, the model for Rodin’s 6’2” masterpiece, “The Thinker” is approximately 28 inches.)
  • One-page maximum write-up containing the following:
    • Title of your piece
    • Brief description of the sculpture, including what inspired you and what you hope viewers of the piece will come away with.
    • Final dimensions of the sculpture
    • Picture of your sculpture.
    • Detail what materials are to be used to create the sculpture
    • How the sculpture will be weatherproofed and secured to the ground for 24 hours.

UPDATED DEADLINES

Please email your one-page write-up and arrange to drop off your model at the museum offices by Thursday, October 29th at the latest. The email address is smmaholidayhomes@gmail.com.

Models of sculptures must be received prior to judging beginning on Monday, November 2nd.

Winners will be notified by Friday, November 6th.

Winning full-size sculptures will need to be installed on Friday, December 4th.

What You’ll Win

  • Each entry chosen will win $100.
  • You’ll get to build your sculpture to scale.
  • Certificate of achievement and a picture.
  • Your sculpture will be displayed on the SMMA Holiday Homes Tour and at an indoor location during the rest of the holiday season.

Please email Lauren O'Neal at smmaholidayhomes@gmail.com with any questions.

We can't wait to see what great creations you come up with!

Can you create a better "snow" sculpture?
